Mineral Green Dreams

Mixed media (acrylic paint, photo transfer assemblage, acrylic paint peels, posca, oil pastel) on canvas, 36 x 48.”

The composition of this painting is from a photograph I took of lichen growing on the bark of a tree. I love the way the lichen crawls across the canvas showcasing many different tiny worlds of textures….textures that fan out in leafy patterns or squeeze together in amoeba-like clusters or speckle across the canvas on sandy surfaces or form seashell scallops. Up close, lichen appears to transform beyond its original form.

I use the subtle color variations in the lichen as my guide to inform my color palette which I amplify….cerulean blue, teal, light phthalo green, viridian green, ultramarines, vibrant yellow-green, magenta. I leave glimpses of the warm teracota underpainting peeking through.

This painting is in a private collection in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
